Google starts rolling out the Play Store redesign for Wear OS smartwatches: What to expect – Times of India

Google Play Store on Wear OS smartwatches is getting a new redesign. This new design was unveiled with the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro at Samsung’s Unpacked event that was held last month. Moreover, Google’s September Play System update also teased the new change. According to a report by 9to5Google, the tech giant has now started rolling out the new design for Google Play Store on Wear OS smartwatches. The report also suggests that the redesign will be going live on version 31.2.10-26 of Google Play for Wear OS. However, it is important to note that the new design will be offered with a server-side update, so it might take some time to reach all the users.
How does the new design look
Previously, the search button of Google Play Store in Wear OS smartwatches used to come inside a circular-shaped button. However, the new design has replaced the circular button with a pill-shaped one. Moreover, a “See More” button has also been added next to the “Explore all” option that shows three app suggestions. The new button can be used to know the app’s name, icon and rating.

Apart from this, the “Recommended for you” and “Now trending” sections will now be followed by large cards for — “Watch faces,” “Music streaming,” “Essential watch apps,” and “Healthy mind & body,” the report notes.
After that section, the new design also has an option that allows users to “browse and install apps from your other devices,” like your phone. This feature can be used to open the Play Store on the other device (smartphone in this case) directly from your smartwatch.
Lastly, the pages end with the “Manage apps” and “Settings” options. The “Manage apps” option is important for checking app updates, yet it is placed at the end of all the other cards.
How is it an upgrade from the previous design
As per the report, the current design is “ very text heavy and boring” which doesn’t allow much wiggle room for app promotion. The report suggests that promoting apps directly on the main feed can encourage users to download more applications for their wearables and might also boost developer interest.

This new design is an indication that “wearable design has consolidated around showing most content in one view” rather than the users required to scroll through multiple menus, the report notes.
Meanwhile, Google is also planning to roll out the automatic installation feature for the companion apps. Whenever users have to install an app on their Wear OS device that requires a companion app, this upcoming feature will automatically install the companion app on their mobile devices.
