‘Have had probably a thousand bats by now,’ reveals Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who led his team to two World Cup victories, has disclosed that during his prime as a player, he not only amassed hundreds but also meticulously collected every bat with which he scored an international century.
The 49-year-old, currently serving as the head coach of Delhi Capitals, was known as one of the most feared big-hitters of his time.He made these revelations while speaking at the DP World’s Beyond Boundaries initiative, which aims to provide kits to young players in Delhi.

Throughout his illustrious career, which ended in 2012, Ponting scored an impressive 71 international hundreds, with an astounding 41 of them coming in Test matches. He shared, “Believe it or not, I have still got my first bat at my home. It still has all the stickers and everything on it. We literally have had probably a thousand of bats by now, some are more special than others.”

Ponting also revealed that he kept every bat with which he scored an international hundred, and he would write the score and the opposition’s name on it.
When asked if his collection included the bat from his memorable unbeaten 140 against India in the 2003 World Cup final, where he almost single-handedly clinched the trophy for Australia, Ponting replied with a simple “Yes it does.” Sourav Ganguly, the former India captain and current Delhi Capitals Director, shared the stage with Ponting and smiled at this revelation.
“It’s not like it’s displayed in my house. I keep those in my garage,” he added.

Ganguly also shared his own experience, recalling the time he received his first bat at the age of 13 and how happy he was because the ball would just fly off the bat.
“I remember I had my first bat when I was 13 and how happy I was because the ball would just fly off the bat,” the former BCCI President said.

David Warner, who is playing for Delhi Capitals this season, mentioned that his first bat was a birthday present from his uncle and that it never left his side, always kept next to his bed.
“My uncle got me my first bat for my birthday, and it never left my side and used to be next to my bed,” he said.
