JAMMU: Police on Saturday arrested former Jammu & Kashmir minister Jatinder Singh alias Babu Singh who was absconding ever since his name figured in a hawala racket case.
Singh had been at large since March 31 after police busted a hawala racket with the arrest of a person with huge unaccounted cash. A lookout notice was issued against him on April 6.
Jammu SSP Chandan Kohli said, “Singh was taken into custody on Saturday morning in Kathua district in relation to a hawala case being probed by the Jammu Police. He was initially taken to Rajbagh police station and then shifted to Jammu for further questioning.”
Singh was a minister in the PDP-Congress government in 2002-2005 and currently heads a social organisation. The arrested accused, Mohammad Shareef, had disclosed that he was tasked by Jatinder Singh to collect money from Srinagar. Police had claimed that during questioning Shareef also disclosed names of his local and foreign associates, including those from Pakistan.
Jatinder Singh had won J&K state assembly elections as an independent from Kathua in 2004 and had later joined Congress and was appointed a minister a few months before PDP had withdrawn support to the Ghulam Nabi Azad-led Congress government.
