In a first since 1984, Centre allows Golden Temple to accept donations from foreign-based devotees | India News – Times of India

AMRITSAR: After a period of over three and half decades, the followers of Sikhism based outside India will now be able to credit donations or ‘daswandh’ (one tenth of income ) directly in a dedicated account of Golden Temple after the Union government registered the holy body under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act,(FCRA) 2010.
“After 1984 foreign based Sangat was restricted from directly sending donations to Golden Temple’s account but now after receiving FCRA 2010 registration they will be able to fulfil their religious aspirations as par their ease” said SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal here on Thursday.
The management of Golden Temple had on May 27,2020 applied for the registration under FCRA 2010.
Longowal said that after 1984, foreign based sangat had to find alternatives to send donations or daswandh to Golden Temple.
“Many devotees used to send donations for langar, propagation of Sikhism or welfare work through their relatives or friends visiting Amritsar but now they will be able to do so at their own ease from their respective countries,” he said.
Reacting to the FCRA registration, home minister Amit shah tweeted “Sri Darbar Sahib’s divinity gives strength to us. For decades, the Sangat worldwide was unable to serve there. Modi Government’s decision to allow FCRA to the Sri Harmandir Sahib deepens the connect of Seva between the Sangat globally and the Sri Darbar Sahib. A blessed moment!”
Union minister for civil aviation and housing and urban affairs Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted “Service to humanity is a pivotal pillar of Sikhism. Deeply grateful to PM @narendramodi ji & HM @AmitShahJi for allowing Sikh Sangat around the world to contribute to Sewa at Sri Darbar Sahib through FCRA. Request was received on 27 May. Authorisation issued on 9 Sept 2020”.
With the registration under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), 2010, the SSPC is hopeful of increased flow of foreign donations which could further be used for the propagation of Sikhism and welfare of mankind.
Senior vice president of the SGPC Rajinder Singh Mehta said “More donations will also help us to spend more on propagation of Sikh religion and help people in need especially during natural calamities etc” he said.
