Recently pictures of a woman dressed in heavy gold jewellery and sari, feeding the poor on the streets, went viral on social media. The woman was later identified as 36-year-old Papiya Kar of Kolkata. Kar took the food to the homeless staying at Ranaghat station whom she had invited to her brother’s wedding. She later told TOI that she has been serving food to the homeless for the past 13 years. Kar also pointed out that although her photos might be going viral, she does not care for publicity and believes in serving the helpless. She also provides free tuition for kids and vocational training to their parents every Sunday in Kolkata’s Esplanade locality.
