Deliberations among the leaders were significant since they were seen as attempts to iron out differences regional parties have with Congress. At the INLD rally in Fatehabad, Nitish laboured over this point, insisting that a united group of non-BJP forces must come together to take on BJP. Sonia is understood to have conveyed to the two leaders that detailed talks in this regard will be held after the Congress’ presidential election process is completed next month.
In the first formal meeting between the leaders of the three parties since Nitish Kumar snapped ties with BJP, the leaders also stressed the need to bury their differences and work together to take on the ruling BJP. “We have urged Soniaji to invite everyone as hers is the biggest party.
“Everybody will come on one platform for holding talks and dethroning BJP in 2024 Lok Sabha elections,” Lalu said following their meeting.
He reiterated that BJP will be removed from the Centre with the unity of opposition parties. “Everybody has to be united as we have united in Bihar and thrown out BJP,” said Lalu as he claimed that opposition leaders are not threatened by imprisonment. Lalu was convicted in a few fodder scam cases by a special CBI court at Ranchi and was released on bail in May.
“India is moving towards dictatorship; there are no solutions for problems like poverty and unemployment. They (BJP) did not pay heed to any of these problems and tried to threaten opposition leaders by sending many inside jail. But opposition is not scared at all,” Lalu said.
Meanwhile, Nitish seconded Lalu’s view to unite opposition parties, a point he also stressed on earlier in the day at the INLD rally to mark the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Devi Lal. While Nitish and Lalu appear to be leaning in favour of a national alliance, CPM’s Sitaram Yechury has insisted on the need to arrive at state-level understandings first, so that opposition parties can improve their electoral performances. Yechury too had participated in the opposition rally on Sunday.
