NEW DELHI: Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday dismissed allegations by some states that vaccines were falling short, saying the states are given advance visibility on stocks which should be used for planning sessions and avoiding inconvenience to people.
Around 13.5 crore doses of Covid vaccines are expected to be available to states in July, averaging around 50 lakh doses per day, officials said indicating improved supplies even as daily vaccinations suffered in the initial week led by disruptions in Covaxin supply.
Around 11.46 crore doses were supplied during June. While only around 5 crore doses have been administered during the first 13 days of July, the government expects daily vaccinations to pick up pace in the upcoming weeks.
In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Mandaviya said statements by some opposition governments are not based on facts and intend to create panic among the people. The Centre maintains that vaccine logistics management has to be done with a ‘just in time’ approach and this is where the problem lies.
Mandaviya said : “If the Centre is already giving this information in advance and yet we see mismanagement and long queues of vaccine takers, then it is very clear what the problem is and who is the reason for it”.
“We indicate availability of doses to states 15 days in advance to enable planning of vaccination centres and sessions accordingly. It requires time and a calibrated approach starting from identification of available doses to testing of batches and delivering them to places where they are needed,” an official said.
The new health minister further tweeted, “The Central government had informed states on June 19, 2021, about how many doses of the vaccine would be made available in the states in July. Batch wise information is given in advance only. So the states know very well when and what quantity of vaccine doses they will get’’.
According to health ministry data till Wednesday 8am, more than 39.59 crore vaccine doses have been provided to States and UTs so far, through all sources and a further 30,250 doses are in the pipeline. Of this, the total consumption including wastages is 38.07 crore doses. More than 1.51 crore balance and unutilized Covid vaccine doses are still available with the states and UTs and private hospitals to be administered.
