Miss Israel confronted, threatened in New York for declaring IDF affiliation – Times of India

NEW DELHI: In a shocking incident in New York City’s Washington Square Park, Noa Cochva, Miss Israel 2021, faced severe hostility and was threatened with a knife while carrying a poster saying, “I am an IDF soldier. Ask me anything.” The event unfolded as Cochva intended to engage the public in open dialogue about her role in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
Cochva was met with immediate accusations, including being labeled a “war criminal” by an onlooker who questioned how she manages to sleep at night.Unfazed, Cochva responded confidently, asserting her belief in being on the “right side of history.” The situation escalated when a woman, identifying Cochva as a Zionist, menacingly brandished a knife. Amid the confrontations, varying opinions were voiced, with some calling the demonstration “stupid” and urging Cochva and her team to leave, a Daily Mail report said.
The event also drew supportive interactions, with individuals approaching Cochva to express gratitude for her service. Despite the confrontation, Cochva took to Instagram to reflect on the hostility she encountered, emphasizing her commitment to peaceful dialogue and expressing dismay over the aggressive opposition.
The incident occurs against a backdrop of rising tensions on college campuses and across the US, where President Joe Biden recently condemned a “ferocious surge of antisemitism” during a Holocaust remembrance ceremony, highlighting the broader societal implications of such individual acts of hostility.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has explicitly warned that he would withhold weapons from Israel if it proceeds with a significant invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza. This declaration comes amid ongoing ceasefire talks in Cairo. “I made it clear that if they go into Rafah …, I’m not supplying the weapons,” Biden remarked during a CNN interview on Wednesday. His administration has consistently urged Israel to detail its strategies for civilian protection in Rafah.
Biden also admitted the harsh reality that US-supplied bombs have been responsible for civilian casualties in Gaza during the seven-month campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas.
With these comments, Biden starkly emphasized the urgency for Israel to avoid escalating its military actions in Rafah, a city where many Palestinians have taken refuge. Despite Biden’s firm stance, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated plans to continue the Rafah operation, citing the presence of numerous Hamas militants.
Amidst these tensions, Israel has intensified its military operations in southern Gaza, utilizing tanks and aerial assaults, following their advance through the Rafah border on Tuesday, which also disrupted a critical humanitarian aid path.
