Sharing the most inspirational quality about Dilip Kumar, Nawaz added, “As an actor he had a very dramatic pause. When he was silent, it felt like he was relaying a whole lot of emotions. His style of acting was way ahead of its time. At that time we had Parsi theatre and loud style of performances but Dilip sahab was very calm and silent in his acts. He was so realistic with his portrayals even now I am shocked how he managed to deliver such peaceful performances. Only Dilip Kumar sahab managed to take a long pause, speak in whispers and still win hearts. He broke the trend of loud cinema.”
Interestingly, Nawazuddin Siddiqui had a close interaction with the legendary actor in 2001-02, when he was shooting at Dilip Kumar’s Bandra residence. “I have stayed with him for three months when I was shooting for a TV show which was being made by Saira ji. It was completely shot at Dilip sahab’s house, in the evening we would all gather and dine together. We would discuss films and acting at length. Dilip sahab would share a lot of things with us. He would correct us if we did something wrong. We would question him about his movies and Dilip sahab would gracefully reply to all our curious questions.” Sharing an anecdote from their conversations the actor revealed, “Dilip Kumar sahab had told us that he rejected the role of Sherif Ali in for the film ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ (1962) because he wanted to do the role played by Peter O’Toole. It was also his wish to do a gangster movie but after he watched ‘Godfather’, Dilip sahab felt that Marlon Brando has done it so I don’t want to do it now.”
Dilip Kumar has left behind a plethora of iconic performances and picking a favourite is a tough task. “I never felt that he shouldn’t have done a particular movie because he perfectly fit into every character he played. Be it ‘Devdas’, ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ , ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Leader’ and ‘Aan’. He was outstanding in every film he did!” concludes Nawazuddin.
