Govt’s response in the Lok Sabha triggered a massive debate over the UAPA law. The Centre informed the Lok Sabha that there were no charges in two-thirds of UAPA cases. The Centre also confirmed that only a few of them are put on trial. The revelation came in reply to a question by Congress MP Ramya Haridas. Union MoS Home Affairs Nityanand Rai revealed that only 1074 out of 4923 (only 22%) people arrested in UAPA cases from 2017-19 were charge-sheeted and sent to trial.
