The WHO has announced that Coronavirus variants are now to be named on the basis of the Greek alphabet instead of their place of discovery. The move has been taken to avoid stigmatisation and discrimination faced by the places after whch these variants have been named. The four variants of concerns, known to the public as the UK, South Africa, Brazil and India variants will now be known as Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta respectively. The scientific names involving numbers will still be used for research purposes.
