While felicitating the winners of India Skills Competition here, Naveen announced that from this edition onwards, the gold medal winner in the WSC will get an award of Rs 1 crore, silver medallist will get Rs 50 lakh, and the bronze medallist will get Rs 25 lakh.
Official sources said, previously, it was Rs 10 lakh to gold medal winners, Rs 5 lakh for silver medallist and Rs 2 lakh for bronze medallist. Name of this cash award is Biju Patnaik Dakhyata Award.
Even the institution, which nurtures the gold medal winner, will get Rs 5 crore for setting up the Biju Patnaik Centre of Excellence. The government had sanctioned Rs 5 crore in 2019 for setting up of Biju Patnaik Centre of Excellence at CV Raman Global University, Bhubaneswar.
The state government had given this fund to this university after its student Aswatha Narayana won first gold for India in the WSC held at Kazan in Russia in 2019.
The government has started preparing its students for the Shanghai WSC. Odisha has set the target of 2-3-4 for the participants from Odisha (bringing two golds, three silvers and four bronzes for the country) at WSC in Shanghai.
Odisha students have got as many as 59 medals at the India Skills Competition 2021 which was held in New Delhi in January this year. Odisha stood first in this competition. Naveen congratulated all the winners, their parents, their coaches, institutions and industry partners for this great achievement. He also thanked the National Skill Development Corporation for the support.
Naveen said Odisha will put the best resources available towards training the winners as they go through the gruelling preparations for the WSC in October. “From now onwards, may all of you have ‘Shanghai on my mind, India in my heart’, as you work towards making this dream a reality,” said the chief minister.
Among others, Odisha Skill Development Authority chairman Subrato Bagchi, skill development and technical education minister Premananda Nayak, department secretary Hemant Sharma and other government officials attended the felicitation ceremony.
