Oscars slapgate: Academy ‘upset’ over Will Smith’s ‘unacceptable and harmful behaviour’, will take ‘appropriate action’ | English Movie News – Hollywood – Times of India

Will Smith’s action after comedian Chris Rock’s joke on Jada Pinkett Smith’s medical condition at Oscar 2022 has attracted international attention. Almost everyone on the internet including the Hollywood and Bollywood celebs have shared their reaction to the incident. Will Smith has issued a public apology to Chris Rock over the slapping incident and Jada recently shared a post which reads, ‘This is a season for healing and I’m here for it,’ but, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is ‘upset and outraged’ over the whole incident and will soon take ‘appropriate action’ over the ‘unacceptable and harmful behaviour’ after an ‘official process’. AMPAS president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson have written a letter to the Academy members saying, ‘We are upset and outraged that those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour on stage by a nominee. To be clear, we condemn Mr. Smith’s actions that transpired Sunday night. As outlined in our bylaws, the Academy’s Board of Governors will now make a determination on appropriate action for Mr. Smith. As governed by California law regarding members of nonprofit organizations like the Academy, and set forth in our Standards of Conduct, this must follow an official process that will take a few weeks.’ For the uninitiated, all of this happened after comedian Rock came on stage to announce an award and cracked a joke at actor Jada Pinkett Smith’s expense. Angered by the joke Will Smith responded by slapping the actor on stage. Will Smith later apologised to the Oscar organisers in his acceptance speech after he won the best actor trophy for his performance in ‘King Richard’. According to the reports, the comedian Chris Rock has declined to take any legal action against Smith.
