Ponnaiyan, while participating in a party programme on Monday, said the BJP had been carrying out a campaign discreetly to push back the AIADMK. He appealed to the party IT wing to create awareness in the social media about BJP’s stand on inter-state water disputes. Ponnaiyan made the statement in the presence of senior party leaders and former ministers D Jayakumar, C Ve Shanmugam and others.
BJP vice-president Karu Nagarajan, general secretary R Srinivasan and several other functionaries reacted to Ponnaiyan’s statements and said they had been in the forefront when it came to people’s issues and inter-state water disputes.
“We are the first to stage a massive hunger protest regarding Mullaperiyar dam issue. We conducted a protest in Thanjavur on the Mekedatu ram row. We are no less than the AIADMK in protesting for the rights of the people of the state. I don’t know why he was talking like this. I think he might have a memory loss problem,” Karu Nagarajan told TOI.
He said the saffron party and its leadership wanted to grow strong in the state and it was reaching out to the people. “People decide, and not Ponnaiyan,” he said in response to Ponnaiyan’s remark that BJP was trying to take advantage of the AIADMK to grow in Tamil Nadu.
Echoing the same, Srinivasan said the BJP and its leaders were participating in at least two or three protests for the issues concerning the people and the state and was making its presence felt in Tamil Nadu. The party leaders were taking part in micro and macro level protests for common cause, he said.
“We agree that the AIADMK is the prime opposition in the legislative assembly, but we are the prime opposition party to the DMK in the people’s forum. Moreover, our party is unlike the allies of the DMK and the AIADMK, which are dead weights. We want to grow on our own and emerge as a force in state politics. Meanwhile, we value the AIADMK as we want them in the long run and want to complement each other to take on the DMK, which is strong now,” he said.
State president of IT wing and social media C T R Nirmal Kumar said, “Ponnaiyan himself had double standards on many issues. Hence, he had been sidelined for many years in the party by former leader J Jayalalithaa. We will not compromise on our stand on any issue for vote politics,” he said.
