Pay Rs 2 lakh to rape survivor as police didn’t file complaint, Maharashtra govt told | India News – Times of India

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) has asked the government to pay Rs 2 lakh compensation to an alleged gangrape victim because the police failed to register her complaint and initiate appropriate action. Police acted on her complaint only after she approached a senior police officer in June 2022.
MSHRC chairperson Justice K K Tated asked the government to “hold inquiry and take appropriate steps against the police officers who failed and neglected to register the FIR under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and also pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the complainant within two months”.
The woman alleged that in 2021, four men, in groups of two, entered her house through the window late night when her husband, a driver, was at work and raped her at knifepoint. Her elder child was sleeping in the same room, her complaint said.
The accused allegedly made a video of the sexual assault and had used it to blackmail her for sexual favours and also demanded Rs 2 lakh. Her suffering continued for six months, after which she, along with her husband, went to the local police station to file a complaint, but the cops refused to entertain her complaint. The couple then approached the senior officer after which the case was registered in June 2022. The woman then filed a complaint before the MSHRC alleging that the police authority, with malafide intention, supported the culprits and did injustice against her.
