Ranji Trophy: Mumbai thump Andhra Pradesh by nine wickets | Cricket News – Times of India

Making a rousing start to their campaign, last season’s finalists Mumbai thumped Andhra Pradesh by nine wickets inside three days in their opening match of the Ranji Trophy at the Dr PVG Raju ACA Sports Complex in Vizianagaram on Thursday.
On Day 3, after gaining a 93- run first innings lead, the 41-time Ranji champs skittled out Andhra for merely 131 in 47.4 overs in the second innings.
Prithvi Shaw again lost his wicket cheaply for 6, but Mumbai scored the 40 runs they needed for a win in just 6.1 overs, as opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (17*, 2×4, 1×6) and first-innings centurion Armaan Jaffer (17, 4×4) helped themselves to a few boundaries.
Though they missed out on the bonus point which is given to teams for 10-wicket victories, it should be a morale booster ahead of their clash with Saurashtra at the MCA ground in BKC from December 20. They will also have the services of Suryakumar Yadav for that clash.
Pacer Tushar Deshpande took three for 34, while Siddharth Raut and off-spinner Tanush Kotian claimed two wickets each as the hosts’ batting faltered again. The biggest disappointment for Andhra was their skipper Hanuma Vihari, who was out both times to Kotian for 27 (caught behind) and 14 (trapped lbw).
With match figures of 109 for 6 and a crucial unbeaten knock of 63 (106b, 6×4, 1×6) in the first innings while batting at No 8, allrounder Kotian, who seems to be carrying his fine form into this season, has been Mumbai’s standout performer in this game.
“Getting Vihari out twice has given me a lot of confidence. While bowling to him, I kept the ball quick in the air and varied my length. Since he was defending the ball well on the front foot, I was looking to trap him on the backfoot, and succeeded in my plans,” Kotian told TOI from Vizag.
“My (71-run) partnership with Armaan (Jaffer) (for the 7th wicket) took the game away from them. The game was evenly poised at that stage. After Armaan was out, they stopped the flow of my runs by bowling on one side of the wicket and packing the field accordingly. However, I was focused that I won’t give my wicket to them easily, and stretch our total as much as I can,” he said.
“I performed well last season, and in the white-ball tournaments this season, so I’m backing myself to do well again. I had practiced hard with the team before the Ranji, and that is helping me,” Kotian said.
Earlier, Mumbai’s tail didn’t wag, but they still managed to gain a vital lead over Andhra. Resuming at 290 for 6, the visitors lost 4 wickets for just 41 runs to be all out for 331 on Day 3 morning, with spinners Shoaib Mohammed Khan (4-73) and Lalith Mohan doing the damage. It left Kotian stranded due to lack of partners.
Armaan (116, 271b, 16×4, 1×6) failed to increase his overnight score, as he was the first to fallstumped off the left-arm spin of Lalith Mohan- with the score at 296.
Brief Scores: Andhra 238 & 131 (Tushar Deshpande 3-34) lost to Mumbai 331 (Armaan Jaffer 116, Tanush Kotian 63*; Shoaib Mohd Khan 4-73, KV Sasikanth 3-56, Lalith Mohan 3-113) & 40-1 by 9 wickets.
