NEW DELHI: Four Caribbean nations — Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, St Lucia and St Kitts & Nevis — have signed an MoU for the ‘Save Soil’ global movement, initiated by Sadhguru of Isha Foundation to address the soil crisis by inspiring people from around the world to stand up for soil health.
The idea of the movement is to drive policy change worldwide to safeguard, nurture and sustain soils to a minimum of 3-6% organic content. It has been launched as a long-term global effort to create awareness among people to inspire human-environmental action.

The MoU was signed by heads of government and ministers of the Caribbean nations on Friday, ahead of the launch of Sadhguru’s 30,000 km motorcycle ride across Europe, central Asia, west Asia and India as part of the ‘Save Soil’ campaign, starting March 21. The 75-day journey, reflecting India@75 (75 years of India’s independence), will start in London and culminate in New Delhi on June 4, covering 24 countries.
Those involved with signing the MoU include Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Timothy Harris; Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit; Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne; and Prime Minister of St. Lucia Philip J. Pierre. “All four heads of government spoke passionately about the importance of taking decisive action to regenerate and restore the world’s soil, with a clear commitment to institute soil-friendly policies,” said the Isha Foundation in a statement.

The issue of soil degradation is a significant threat to the planet as the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) predicts that soil extinction could become a reality if soil degradation continues at present rates. The ‘Save Soil’ movement seeks to address the ecological degeneration of the soil. Accordingly, efforts of the Foundation would be to bring ecology as an important consideration into the manifestos of political parties, second only to the economy.
In this backdrop, Sadhguru affirmed that “these small (Caribbean) nations — the pearls in the ocean — can make that turnaround and demonstrate” that every nation can and must save its soil in the interest of all future life on the planet.
“We have lost connection with what nurtures our lives. Seeing soil as an inert substance that you can extract from is a completely wrong approach. It is living soil. This is the most important message that needs to go to the young generation and the future generations: the soil is a living entity,” said the statement quoting Sadhguru.
The Foundation claimed that the memorandum was prepared in consultation with top scientists in the world, considering each region’s latitude, climate, economic conditions, and traditional agricultural practices. The resolution, titled ‘Soil Revitalization – Global Policy Draft & Solutions Handbook’, was presented by Sadhguru to the Heads of State as an urgent and unifying initiative to restore soil health.
Sadhguru, during his visit to New Delhi last month, had meetings with agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar and NITI Aayog’s member, Ramesh Chand, over the issue of sustainable agriculture practices and saving soils.
