SC bats for disabled people in police force, seeks govt review | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Centre to reconsider its stand on allowing physically disabled persons to join the police force, including the Indian Police Service. Attorney general K K Venugopal also backed the proposal.
A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, Abhay S Oka and J B Pardiwala said the Centre should allow them to join the force and see how it works out. “Experiment it for a while and if it does not work then you may not continue with it,” the bench said.
Pointing out that not all in the police force are deployed in field jobs for which physical fitness is required, the bench said physically disabled persons can do desk and policy-making works.
The bench also remark-ed that the government-appointed expert committee did not look into the feasibility of allowing physically disabled persons to join the police force and the panel’s recommendation was confined only to acid attack survivors.
Senior advocate Arvind Datar, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that many countries across the world have been allowing disabled persons not only to join their police force but also their defence forces to carry out non-combat jobs.
The petition challenged a government notification that excludes people with physical disabilities from certain branches of civil services, both in combat and administrative capacities.
