I Space told a disappointed audience that the mission was not a complete success. Till the time of going to press, efforts were underway to establish contact with the lander.
Had the mission succeeded, it would have placed Japan and the UAE in the global lunar club with the US, Russia and China.
On April 11, 2019, the first private lunar mission by Israel’s Beresheet lander, operated by Space IL, had lost communication while landing on the moon.
An I Space webcast showed that everything was going smoothly till the last moment, when the lander presumably landed on the moon with a rover of the Japanese Aerospace and Exploration Agency, a rover of the UAE and other payloads.
The monitors in the mission control room showed that everything was operating flawlessly. But when the monitors showed that Hakuto R had landed, the signal to confirm that failed to materialise.
