“I’ve practically grown up in the organisation. I respect and accept their decision,” Nupur Sharma told timesofindia.com when asked to comment on her suspension.
The BJP suspended Nupur Sharma and expelled another leader, Naveen Kumar Jindal, who was also a party spokesperson, for their comments on Prophet Muhammad.
The party took the action even as several Gulf countries registered strong objections over the remarks from Sharma and Jindal.
Nupur Sharma has since unconditionally withdrawn her statements.
In a tweet on June 5, she said, “I have been attending TV debates for the past many days where our Mahadev was being insulted and disrespected continuously. It was mockingly being said that it is not Shivling but a fountain. The Shivling was also being ridiculed by comparing it to roadside signs and poles in Delhi.
“I could not tolerate this continuous insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev and I said some things in response to it. If my words have caused discomfort or hurt religious feelings of anyone whatsoever, I hereby unconditionally withdraw my statement. It was never my intention to hurt anyone’s religious feelings,” Sharma added.

Several Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Iran and Oman and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have condemned the controversial remarks by Sharma and Jindal.
India slammed the comments by OIC as “narrow-minded” and “motivated, misleading and mischievous”.
Reacting strongly to OIC remarks, external affairs ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said India accords “highest respect” to all religions and that the statement by the 57-member grouping exposed its “divisive agenda” which is being pursued at the behest of “vested interests.”
The government has clarified that it accorded the “highest respect to all religions” and dismissed the remarks as “views of fringe elements”.
