Tablighi Jamaat assembly caused spread of Covid among many persons: Home ministry in Rajya Sabha | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The home ministry on Monday told the Rajya Sabha that the huge Tablighi Jamaat assembly in a closed premise in the national Capital in March, with no adherence to laid-down Covid-19 prevention and containment protocols, “also” caused the spread of coronavirus infection among many persons.
Reply to a question by Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai if Tablighi Jamaat cadres were a major reason of spread of Covid-19 in Delhi and other states, MoS (home) G Kishan Reddy said: “As reported by Delhi Police, despite guidelines/ orders issued by various authorities in pursuance of the outbreak of COVID-19, a huge gathering assembled inside a closed premise; over a protracted period of time; without any semblance of social distancing or provision of masks and sanitizers. This also caused spread of Corona Virus infection amongst many persons”.
Reddy said 2,361 persons of Tablighi Jamaat had been evacuated by Delhi Police from its headquarters at Nizamuddin here since March 29, 2020.
He added that while 233 persons of Jamaat have been arrested by Delhi Police, investigation against its chief Maulana Mohd Saad is underway.
“One case relating to Tablighi gathering has been registered by Delhi Police, u/s 304/308/336/188/269/270/271/120-B IPC, Section 14-B Foreigners Act 1946, Section 3 Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 and Section 51/58 Disaster Management Act 2005,” said the MoS.
