Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ relieved from Modi Cabinet – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Union Cabinet expansion at 6 pm today, Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has been dropped from the Modi Cabinet. He resigned from his position on Wednesday stating his health issues.

Pokhriyal, who tested positive for COVID-19 on April 21, was admitted to AIIMS in June again following post Covid complications.

Pokhriyal, a Lok Sabha MP from Uttarakhand’s Haridwar parliamentary seat, was appointed on May 31, 2019, to serve as Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Following the change in the MHRD ministry name, his title was changed to Union minister of education.

Prior to this, he served as the 5th Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2009 to 2011. He was member of 16th Lok Sabha and chairperson, Committee on Government Assurances. Pokhriyal is also known in literary world for his novels, stories and poems.

This would be the first expansion of the Council of Ministers since NDA’s return to power in 2019. Currently, there are 21 Cabinet ministers, nine Ministers with Independent charge, and 23 Ministers of State in the Council of Ministers. The Union Cabinet can have 81 members.
