UP plans to bring uniform civil code even without opposition backing: Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya | India News – Times of India

LUCKNOW: The UP government is “seriously” contemplating bringing the proposed uniform civil code into force in the state, whether the opposition supports it or not, deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya declared on Saturday. His remark came within a day of Union home minister Amit Shah reportedly telling party functionaries at the BJP office in MP’s Bhopal that “it is time to focus on a uniform code”.
“Laws should be the same for all… Our government is going to implement the uniform code. There is a serious discussion on this in all BJP-governed states,” Maurya said. “If all government schemes are being implemented uniformly for all sections of the society in the country in accordance with the approach of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas‘, then a common code must be implemented too.”

The deputy CM alleged that non-BJP parties were looking the other way in pursuit of the politics of appeasement rather than acknowledging that the uniform code was an idea whose time had come.
“A uniform civil code is very important for UP as well as the rest of the country. The nullification of Article 370, construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya and the uniform code have always been top priorities for BJP. If the opposition supports it, well and good; if they don’t, it does not mean we will not consider it,” Maurya said. “Article 370 was nullified even even after the opposition didn’t support the government. The uniform code will be implemented in the same manner.”
In Bhopal the previous day, the Union home minister was quoted as saying that the uniform code would be implemented in Uttarakhand as a pilot project, for which a draft was already being prepared. “Issues like CAA, Ram Mandir, Article 370 and triple talaq have been resolved… In time, everything will fall in place,” Shah said.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath, too, has been speaking for a uniform code across the country at every opportunity.
