We are not leaving the protest site, we don’t have faith in Delhi Police: Protesting wrestlers | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Welcoming the filing of an FIR against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the group of protesting wrestlers led by Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik, on Friday, said that they will continue with their sit-in at Jantar Mantar till the time the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) sidelined president is not arrested and put behind bars by the Delhi Police.
The wrestlers upped the ante by demanding that not only Singh be arrested, but stripped of all official privileges, including terminating his Lok Sabha membership. Singh is an MP from Kaiserganj from Uttar Pradesh.
The development came after the Delhi Police on Friday told the Supreme Court that it will register an FIR against Singh by the end of the day in the complaint filed by the country’s top female wrestlers alleging sexual harassment by the WFI chief.
Reigning CWG and Asian Games champion Vinesh said that the wrestlers fear that the Delhi Police might file a loose FIR against Singh to protect him. She also requested that security be provided to protesting wrestlers as well as the seven complainants, including a minor female athlete, as they fear for their lives from the aides of Singh.
“We don’t trust Delhi police. It took six days for them to register an FIR against Singh. By delaying the FIR, the police has lost our faith. We fear that they will file a loose FIR to save Singh. He should have been by now arrested and put behind the bars, but nothing of that sort happened,” Vinesh said.
“We believe that only the Supreme Court can provide us relief. We only trust the judiciary now. We don’t have faith in police or any of the government-appointed committees. We demand the honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi ji, to remove him as an MP and strips him of all constitutional posts,” she added.
Sakshi, on her part, said that the filing of an FIR against Singh is the first step towards victory and they are confident that he will soon be put behind the bars. “The protest will continue for now. We demand his immediate arrest and removal as an MP. He is an influential politician, a bahubali, and we fear for our lives and that of the complainants.”
Bajrang said Singh has 38 criminal cases pending against him in different police stations of the country but no action was taken against him in any of the cases.
“This could be another one such case. By filing an FIR against him doesn’t mean that our fight to cleanse the sport of wrestling is over. We will continue with our agitation till the time he is removed as the WFI chief and arrested. I also appeal to the authorities to provide us security, as well as to the complainants.”
Vinesh informed that they would provide the evidences of sexual harassment against Singh only to the Supreme Court and not to any government-appointed committees.
“We don’t trust committees any more. They have failed to provide us justice. They have done nothing to punish Singh. We only have faith in the judiciary.”
She also welcomed the outpouring of support for their movement from several former and current sportspersons of the country, as well as Bollywood celebrities. “It feels great that so many sportspersons and celebrities have come forward and tweeting in support of our protest. I want to tell them that this fight is not about just wrestling but to cleanse Indian sports by eradicating such people who exploit athletes from the system,” she added.
On comments by union sports minister Anurag Singh Thakur that he gave a patient hearing to wrestlers when they originally sat on protest in January this year and spent around 12 hours spread across two days listening to their grievances before forming an oversight committee, Bajrang said the minister would better know how much did he listen to their complaints against Singh.
“He must be knowing it better. He said he gave us 12 hours in hearing. I think he didn’t listen to us for more than 12 minutes. That’s why are saying, we don’t arrest any committee,” he added.
