Winning an Oscar doesn’t matter to us, we want to grow as Indian cinema: Karan Johar at ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’ trailer launch – Times of India

Karan Johar on Sunday joined Varun Dhawan, Anil Kapoor, Kiara Advani and Neetu Kapoor for the trailer launch event of their upcoming entertainer, ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’.

At the event, the director was asked for his take on the success of south cinema among the Hindi audience. Karan was also asked why he used the term ‘Hindi cinema’ when addressing the audience. “When films like RRR, KGF, Pushpa are getting such great business, we can say that it is Indian cinema,” Johar said and went on to add, “Films like KGF have shown us that our standards can be raised and that we can move ahead. When I said ‘Hindi Cinema’ it was merely a means of functionality.”

Assuring all that there was no popularity contest between the Hindi film industry and other regional cinema, Johar said, “We are kind of compared to each other, but we just want to say that we are proud of Indian cinema and our wish is that Indian cinema will always movie forward.”

The director was further asked to elaborate if he didn’t consider ‘competition’ within industries, to which he rubbished the claim. He also stated that it was important for Indian cinema to grow, irrespective of its comparison to world cinema.

Johar said, “Winning an Oscar doesn’t matter to us, we want to grow as Indian cinema.”

The director previously backed the ‘Baahubali’ sequel and is also set to launch a pan-India film ‘LIGER’ starring Vijay Deverakonda in the lead.
