Xi met the representatives of the officers and soldiers stationed in Xinjiang in the provincial capital Urumqi on Friday. Xi, who visited the border province from July 12 to 15, extended greetings to all the commanders and troops stationed in the province and affirmed the “outstanding contributions” made by the troops stationed in the region, Xinhua reported. Xi’s meeting with the troops in the region is significant as PLA’s Xinjiang Military Command oversees the India-China border in the Ladakh region amidst a standoff between the two sides since May 2020. Photos in official media showed that Qi Fabao, the regimental commander of the PLA who was injured during the June 2020 clash at Galwan in eastern Ladakh, was also present at the meeting. He was honoured with a “hero regiment commander”award.
Official media said Xi emphasised the need strengthen the army, and to promoting stability in Xinjiang. During his visit, Xi also asked officials to step up efforts to ensure that Islam in China was oriented towards Chinese traditions and religions in the country were adapted to the socialist society being pursued by the ruling Communist Party of China.
