It took millions of people on the brink of starvation, to bring India and Pakistan together. India dispatched its first consignment of Indian foodgrains – that is, 2000 metric tons of wheat – to Afghanistan. No, not by air, but by road – from the Wagah border, and through Pakistan. And now that the modalities of transit have been resolved between the two estranged neighbours, Afghanistan will receive a total of 50, 000 tonnes of food grains as humanitarian aid from India. On February 12, India signed an agreement with the United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP) to distribute wheat in Afghanistan. Trucks will deliver the wheat to WFP warehouses and the UN agency will distribute them to Afghans facing a food crisis. India had requested Pakistan in early October last year, for permission to transit that country. But the Imran Khan government granted permission only in late November. Since then, the two countries have been engaged in talks on the modalities of the exercise. Afghanistan is facing a precarious humanitarian situation after the Taliban came to power in August last year.
